Choosing the right pool chlorine is important for maintaining water that’s clean, safe, and clear. Chlorine is the most common way to sanitize a pool, but with so many options it can be confusing to decide which is the right chlorine for the pool.
Types of Chlorine
There are three major types of chlorine:
- Liquid: Liquid chlorine is very easy to apply but requires more frequent application, this is great for large pools.
- NST Tabs: NST Tabs are slow-dissolving, making it perfect for long-term consistent chlorination.
- Granular (Dichlor): Granular pool chlorine has a powder-like texture that can be used to sanitize and shock pool water.
Consider Your Pool’s Needs
There are factors about your specific pool to think about:
- Pool Size: Larger pools may benefit from liquid or tablet chlorine due to the ease of application.
- Pool Type: The material of your pool can determine what chlorine you get. For example, granular pool chlorine can damage the lining of a pool making liquid or tablet chlorine the safer options.
- Outdoor or Indoor Pool: Outdoor pools often require stabilized chlorine (contains cyanuric acid) to protect against UV rays. Indoor pools don’t need this protection, making unstabilized (no cyanuric acid) a better choice.
Budget and Convenience
You may want to consider the cost and convenience with each chlorine product.
- Cost: Tablets tend to be the most expensive upfront but require less frequent application, whereas liquid is a cheap pool chlorine that requires more dosing.
- Availability: Some chlorine types may be more available in your area than others.
- Application Frequency: Liquid chlorine needs to be applied more frequently. Tablets provide long-term chlorination with less application. Granular is very potent but needs to be dissolved prior to adding.
Safety Considerations
Regardless of the chlorine product you choose, always consider:
- Storage: Chlorine should be kept in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and out of reach from children and pets.
- Handling: Use gloves and eye protection when handling chlorine.
